DESCRIPTION

Thie early canning tin represents the very first patented closure for a canning jar. A quart tin with the original glass lid embossed: "SPRATTS PATENT JULY 18 1854". The can is in exceptionally fine shape without rust, and the glass lid is not damaged. It was not known at the time, but tins of this type were a health hazard, due to the lead-based solder used for sealing the seams of the vessel.

This item is from the Philip Robinson Museum collection.
